Exactly here around the lantern about 500 years ago was the cemetery where the worst type of people was buried. People who committed suicide, murderers, the ones who died from STDs or plagues were not allowed to be buried in Krakow, so they were buried outside of the city walls. The lantern would be always lit during the night, so every traveler would be warned not to come close to the cemetery in order to avoid infections and diseases.
